Former #1, New #1 Get Big Weekend Wins
Professional golf saw tournaments played on both sides of the pond this past week. The European Tour held their flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship, at Wentworth in England, while the PGA Tour made their yearly tour stop at the Crowne Plaza Invitational. Both events had exciting finishes and saw a former and current number one in the world come away victorious.
Over in England, Palm Beach Gardens resident Rory Mcllroy erased a seven shot deficit on Sunday to win the BMW PGA Championship. It was an emotional week for the Bears Club member. On Monday, Mcllroy announced that he had broken off his engagement with his fiancee and tennis pro Caroline Wozniacki. They newly single Mcllroy then went out and 68, 71, 69, and 66 to win for the first time since the Australian Open at the end of 2013. His six under 66 on Sunday included six birdies and an eagle and was enough to get past Shane Lowry by one shot. Thomas Bjorn, who held the lead after 18, 36, and 54 holes, and who shot a course record 62 on Thursday, shot a Sunday 75 to finish in a tie for third with Luke Donald, Donald, who spends part of the year in Palm Beach Gardens, and his wife welcomed their third child while he was in England for the tournament.
Meanwhile, back in the states, the PGA Tour made it’s annual tour stop at the “house that Ben Hogan built”, teeing it up at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial. Newly minted number one Adam Scott added the event to his schedule and immediately proved to the world that he deserved that number one ranking. Scott got off to a rocky start, firing a 1-over 71 on Thursday. He followed that up with rounds 68, 66, and 66. The Sunday 66 got him into a playoff with 2013 PGA Champion Jason Dufner. After draining a 15 foot putt to keep the playoff alive on the second hole, Scott drained another birdie putt on the third playoff hole to put the pressure on Dufner. Dufner missed his birdie putt giving Adam Scott the victory. With the Victory, Adam Scott became the first golfer to successfully complete the “Texas Slam”. He has now won all four Texas events in his career which are the Crowne Plaza Invitational, the Valero Texas Open, the Shell Houston Open, and the HP Byron Nelson Championship.
It wasn’t just a big weekend for the young men on tour though, While the under 50 golfers were either teeing it up in Texas or England, the best of the over 50 golfers were teeing it up in Michigan at the 2014 Senior PGA Championship. Colin Montgomerie, who in his career has had 42 wins but none in a major, finally got his first major championship by winning the Senior PGA. Holding off a late surge by U.S. Ryder Cup Captain Tom Watson, Montgomerie matched Watson with a final round 65 to not only get his first professional major championship but his first ever win on American soil.
