Bernhard Langer Wins 2014 Charles Schwab Cup
At 57 years old, Bernhard Langer is showing no signs of slowing down.
He finished in a tie for eighth at this years Masters after a Sunday 69. He was mentioned numerous times in Ryder Cup talk as a possible captains pick for European captain Paul McGinley. Oh and he won on his own tour, the Champions Tour, five times with another four runner up finishes. In total, the Boca Raton resident competed in 20 events on the Champions Tour and finished in the top 10 a whopping 17 times.
While Langer didn’t win this weekend at the AT&T Championship, he had to settle for yet another top 10 finish, he did come away with some more hardware as he clinched the 2014 Charles Schwab Cup with one week left in the season.
Michael Allen won the AT&T Championship for his second win of the season (he also won the Allianz Championship at Broken Sound in Boca earlier in the year), but not surprisingly most of the talk was about Langer’s historic season.
The top 30 in the Charles Schwab Cup standings will compete in next weeks finale, and despite already having clinched the season, Langer said he intends to play anyway.
“I’m a guy who tries his best whenever I tee it up, and I’m still going to tee it up next week hoping to win the tournament,” Langer said. “There’s still a lot of money on the line. But there’s a little less pressure now. I get to enjoy it.”
Robert Streb Gets First PGA Tour Win
Robert Streb birdied the second playoff hole to win the McGladrey classic, earning his first PGA Tour win.
Streb survived a three-way playoff with Brendon de Jonge and Will MacKenzie to get the win after having to wait 90 minutes to even see if he was going to get into a playoff in the first place.
MacKenzie was eliminated on the first playoff hole when he made a bogey and both Streb and de Jonge made par. Streb then hit his tee shot on the par-3 17th second playoff hole to within just feet of the cup to get the win.
“I was pretty nervous over those short putts, but managed to work it out, and things went in my favor,” Streb said.
While it hasn’t been the easiest road on Tour for Streb he now has some things to look forward to. In addition to the million dollar pay day, his win earns him trips to the Masters, Tournament of Champions in Hawaii, and The Players Championship just to name a few. Oh, and he and his wife Maggie are expecting their first child in February.
