It’s Rory’s World And We Are All Just Living In It

With all the talks of Jordan Spieth winning the Masters and Rickie Fowler winning The PLAYERS Championship, Rory Mcllroy reminded us why he’s the top golfer in the world this weekend when he torched the field at the Wells Fargo Championship.

Mcllroy seems to get extra motivation by other golfers getting all the attention. Last month, all the talk was about Spite’s win at the Masters. The next time Rory teed it up at the WGC-Cadillac Match Play he won.

All the talk heading into this week was the way Fowler won The PLAYERS. Rory’s response? Shattering Quail Hollow and tournament records on the way to another dominating win.

“It does push me,” McIlroy said. “I think you see guys that you knew well, guys that are your peers and they’re winning golf tournaments, big golf tournaments, golf tournaments that you want to win. It motivates you and spurs you on to go and maybe practice a little bit harder or just try and play a little bit better.”

Mallory’s record setting performance started on Saturday when he broke the course record by 1 shot, firing a 61 and shooting to the top of the leaderboard. He broke his own course record which he sat when he fired a 62 at the same event in 2010.

He then came out Sunday and simply ran away and hid. Both his finishing score (21-under par), and his margin of victory (7 shots) are new tournament records. In addition, he broke his own record for most birdies made on the week, pouring in 27.

It was a dominating performance by the Palm Beach Gardens resident that almost didn’t happen.

The Wells Fargo Championship wasn’t on his schedule at the start of the year, but then he saw in April that he stood outside the top 100 in the FedExCup.

“I said, ‘I need to play a little bit more. I feel like I’m playing well,’ ” McIlroy said.

Quail Hollow already has a special place in Mallory’s heart. It was the site of his first career PGA Tour win five years ago. Now, it’s the spot of what very well could turn into a repeat of last year’s “Summer of Rory”.

The next few weeks will be busy for Mcllroy. This week he is playing in the European Tour’s flagship event, where he still holds membership, the BMW PGA at Wentworth in England. He will then jet off to his native country and play in the Irish Open, before coming back to the U.S. and preparing for the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay.

Regardless of how the next few weeks play out, Rory reminded us all on Sunday that this is his world and we are all just living in it.
