Jason Day Wins the BMW, Tightens POY Race
Last month, Jason Day crossed a career goal off his list when he won his first major at the PGA Championship. This week, at the BMW Championship, Day crossed another golf related goal off his bucket list.
With his win, Day became the top ranked golfer in the world, making him the youngest Australian ever to hold the top ranking in the world of golf. Day ran away with the BMW Championship, winning by 6 shots, and with that passed both Rory Mcllroy and Jordan Spieth for the top spot.
“I felt a lot of pressure the last two days,” Day said. “Especially today, knowing I had a six-shot lead. Things could happen, I could shoot a couple over and all of a sudden, I’m not winning. Yesterday and today were the toughest rounds I’ve ever had to play knowing I could be No. 1.”
The win for Day as about as anticlimactic as they get with nobody getting within closer than four shots at any point. Either way though, Day racked up his 5th win of the season and his fourth win since July.
“All I want to do is win,” Day said. “I’ve been working so hard. It’s been a phenomenal run.”
While the Player of the Year trophy is still likely going to Spieth (although a Day win at the Tour Championship and a FedEx Cup title could certainly change that), Day is certainly making the voting process a little tougher with his run as of late. Instead of all the talk being centered around Rory and Jordan, Day is making sure with his run of late to make that conversation a talk about a “Big 3”.
From the Open Championship on, Day is 101 under par. The question still remains, what gets weighed more heavily, number of wins or quality of wins? Day has the number of wins category locked up in the battle between him and Spieth. Spieth though, has the edge when it comes to majors having won the first two of the season to Day’s one. If you ask Rory, the answer to the question is a no brainer.
“Majors trump anything,” Mcllroy said. “Jordan has had that locked up since the Open Championship.”
That decision will ultimately come down to the voters, but if Day wins again this week at the Tour Championship and with that the FedEx Cup, the argument and ultimate decision could be one of the most compelling we have seen when it comes to the Player of the Year vote.
