PGA Championship Returning To Kiawah Island in 2021
When we lost saw Kiawah Island’s Ocean Course displayed to the country, a young(er) Rory Mcllroy was backing up his 2011 U.S. Open with with a dominating record eight shot victory at the 2012 PGA Championship.
There had been much speculation that the PGA Championship would be returning to the Kiawah’s Ocean Course in the near future, and on Friday the announcement was formally made. The Palm Beach Gardens based PGA of America and Kiawah Island Golf Resort announced that the PGA Championship will be returning to the famed site in 2021.
“It’s an honor to have the PGA Championship returning to the Ocean Course and Kiawah Island,” said Kiawah Island Golf Resort Chairman Bill Goodwin. “We have enjoyed dramatic finishes and premier champions each time the PGA of America elected to bring an event to the island. We will do all that we can to provide the best possible conditions for the world’s best players and make the experience memorable to golf fans of South Carolina and to thousands of visitors worldwide.”
When the course hosted the event in 2012, it caused many logistical nightmares, namely the increase in traffic. The island is serviced by only two roads, which forced spectators to make a lengthy journey to the course. A rainstorm on Saturday compounded the problem, causing traffic jams between the course and designated parking areas.
Designed by Pete Dye and opened in 1991, the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island is no stranger to hosting major golf events. It hosted the Ryder Cup in 1991, the World Cup of Golf in 1997 and 2003, the Senior PGA Championship in 2007, and of course the PGA Championship in 2012.
